Do it all the time. Don't know why, just do it. Just part of the process I guess. I am probably especially bad because I don't use patterns, just pick up a piece of wood and wing it. But, even if I try to do two in a row that are alike or close to alike it still happens.

Hmm - don't know. Still trying to get to where I have a good day. ;-) Sometimes I feel like I'm playing the part of the Mr. Bean of carving. (If you don't know Mr. Bean - look him up - Rowan Atkinson from the UK. VERY silly but highly funny.)

It's all part of the learning process. Practice makes perfect, but more practice is needed. We tend to think that because we have a couple of good days in a row, that we have this carving thing down pat. But, along comes a bad day when nothing seems to go right, and brings us back to reality.

It takes years to become a good carver, and in doing so learn many of the skills needed. Keeping tools sharp, reading the wood, what works and what doesn't. Some days we have to learn new lessons, a lesson that we don't know everything.

As you progress they become fewer and fewer, but I don't think they ever completely go away! I know they certainly don't for me, so I have a ways to go yet and many lessons to learn. What you do learn is to accept them!

Just an opinion, for what it's worth.
