Default Master Carver ??

Many times I see folks listed as a "Master Carver". What does it take to become a Master Carver?

Heh heh - I'll beat that by half!
<too funny Mike>

In reality - here in the US there is no law or Guild certification. Anyone can pretty much declare themselves to be a "Master Carver". Though if you were questioned on it and had nothing to show to back that claim up - well . . . they won't get far with the buying public.

In Europe (and perhaps other regions of the world) historically there were in fact Guilds and some had legally protected designations. Not sure if this is still true (regarding the legal protection).

In this country, it was past practice that a person would serve an apprenticeship in a trade (carpenter, plumber, etc.), and upon completing the apprenticeship would become a master in that trade. The period of apprenticeship was several years and performed under the supervision or mentoring of a master. The apprentice had to acquire all the essential skills of the trade before becoming a master.
There are probably not many in this forum that could be considered true masters. I am not a master - only a hobbyist.

I worked for a Co. as a supervisor, when they asked what title I wanted on my new business cards, I came up with something that sounded impressive and looked good on a resume. Guess thats how you become a master.

Hi CuttinUp, good question,

I think rules (for competition) may very depending on the type of carving you are doing. Here are the requirements to enter a wildfowl art carving in the Ward World Championship .

see this link under "rules" for World, Masters, Advanced, Intermediate and Novice and other competition levels.
Ward World Championship 2007

• Masters (turquoise banners):
Only carvers who have previously won two Best of Show awards in Advanced, or placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in Masters or in World in any division other than SR, Shootin’ Rig are eligible to enter in Masters and are no longer eligible to enter Advanced. They are eligible to enter any of the four divisions of the Masters Class competition and/or they may elect to compete for a World title. This applies to either an individual carver or a carver in partnership with another artist.
