Hey Marcia, I have recently become the proud owner of past issues of a carving magazine. I have seen several patterns for bolos or neck slides. I can email you some if you want.

Kenny thank you soo much! I think I can hand draw those patterns, but not so sure about the buffalo.. might end up looking like a platapus or something. LOL Oh this is super..thank you again!! These are ones you've carved?

Wanda.. that would be wonderful if you could share a pattern or two! I'll pm you my other email if thats ok. I've become facinated by these neckerchief and bolo slides.

Are there rules to size , or theme, or colors to these slides? What or who makes them 'uniform approved' ?

Thanks you two.. much appreciated.

And if there are others out there who've carved slides and have pictures.. I'd love to see them!

Marcia.

Marci, I can't truthfully answer about the uniform approved as I have seen Skull and cross bones as a scarf holder. I sure would not have approved that as a Scoutmaster but that is just me. You really don't want them mush bigger than the dimenisons I posted. Maybe a 1/2 inch bigger. Color? Well whatever I guess. Mostly, I took a 1/2 thick piece of wood that I could carry in my pocket and a pencil and when I got the boys off safely to there merit badge classes I whittled on the pieces. and yes, those were carved my me at Scout camps over the years. I have many more and will post them when and IF I find them.

Hi Marcia -
Here's a link to a photo in the Member Galleries of Scout neckerchief slide I carved as a Scoutmaster many years ago. I can post photos of individual ones if you're interested. Phil Allin

Kenny thank you for sharing that information. It is hard to tell what size they are in pictures. I was going to ask my nephew to come over with his scarf just so I could visualize the size. *grin* He just got his first pocket knife and its sooo dull. He wants Aunt Marcia to help teach him how to carve. I've been procrastinating... he's got some awfully tiny fingers... :S

Pallin, oh wow! What a variety you have in that picture. I cant believe I've missed that photo you've posted. Even my hubby came over to look at them all. Does the hand 'hold' the scarf? Same as the one that looks like a loop or a knot of some sort? Are these from patterns you've made up or are they part of a secret society of slide carvers? *grin*

And does anyone know if Bill Burch has a website? I've seen his youtube clip and that millesecond of showing some of his work was waaaay to short. I'm hoping he has a site with individual pictures of his carved slides.

Marcia.

Marcia, all of the slides were my own design except the bear eating the salmon. Many are of local and temporal significance. For example, the oval shape with a climber was for a winter climb of Mt. Whitney. Others were for specific trips made with the Scouts. Some are whimsical ideas (the Yale lock with chain). The hand does hold the scarf in the one you mentioned.

Thank you Kenny, I'll get in touch with you about my address. I did sketch the fingers/hand one off your picture and have started on that one first.

I did forget to ask whats on the backside for holding the scarf?

And what kind of seal did you boys put on the slides?

Pallin, I'm impressed with your own ideas on these slides. I hope to be that good one day. Thank you for sharing.

Marcia.
