SURE! It's called whittling! Been done for ages. Of course, if you want to do traditional carving like what's seen in the architectural features of a building or fine furniture, well, then you might need a tool or two more. But if you set your mind to it, you can do anything with a knife. It just might take a little more practice, patience, and persistence to accomplish what you want. Bob L |

I do 90% of my carving with a knife, a very little is done with a small gouge or v tool. (I shy away from sandpaper too, it doesn't fit my hand )

100% knife carving here. Don't use any other tools. I do use a variety of knives though - long blades, short blades, narrow blades, upswept - you get the idea.

As Bob L (Just Carvin) noted, whittling is usually done with just a sharp knife. Go to the Carver Image Galleries of this site and click on the Whittling category. It may give you some idea of the variety of projects done this way.

I use a carving jack for 99% of my carvings. It has all the tools you need in one pocket knife, great little invention if you ask me. Check out my blog and you can see what i do with it, I'm adding more pics all the time. Michael Gray

Every carving I've posted pictures of here, and all of the carvings shown in my blog (link below) were done with a single knife. Not all of them were done with the same knife, but each individual carving was carved from start to finish with just one knife. The only thing there that I've sanded was the whale. I know that I still have a long way to go as a carver, but I've had a heck of a lot of fun with "just a knife." Added later: The reason for the multiple knives, by the way, is because I started with some pocket knives, then moved to a box cutter, and finally a Flexcut carving knife. I still use the pocket knife for my found wood carvings, but all of my basswood carvings to date have been done with the Flexcut.

You bet you can do a lot with just one knife.....I do! How ever, there are some days when my hands need a break, so then I have to switch to a power tool, or just quit for the day. . |

INHO, carving with just one knife if feasible and many do just that (i.e. pocketknife). To me the fun and creation in carving is having a few tools necessary to do the job required. To me that means, a few gouges, a good V tool and a couple of good qualilty blades. Have fun...
