Default Mantle carving

Hello everyone!
I have been doing some gunstock carving and some smaller carving, but I am really interested in getting into mantle and door carvings. Does anyone have any general advice, or recommend any books that cover it? I did read some posts about the best types of wood. I would like to find some patterns to use to start until I have more time to work on my own designs, just to get some practice in. If anyone has some pictures to show off of your mantle or door carvings I would love to see them!
Thanks for any input
Cheers,
Maren

there is a guy out by me who does these, his name is Joe Dillet. I dont know if he has a wbsite but this might be it

The Carving Shop

he has been carving mantel etc for years and I think he uses primarily oak and most of his work is done with gouges. This site is a good place to start with, and Joe is a great guy and Im sure would help you out with any inquiry

Carving Magazine Back Issues

The articles, Fireplace Mantel Carving, Parts 1, 2 & 3 by Joe Dillett, were in issues 14, 15 and 16 of Wood Carving Magazine. Here's a link to where you can get the back issues--probably the cheapest price--$4.99 ea. plus S&H.
