Talking Mallet Chisels

Does anyone know where I can get a decent set of mallet chisels without without investing $300-$400?

only way I know of is to hopefully find a set on ebay. I waited and ended up with Stubai and Ashley Iles..........not sorry! You are better to spend the money for a good set, if not, you will just do it later! "Pay me now or Pay me later!" lol (between the two..have to say, I sure like the Ashley Iles!)

I'm with Dave on this one. If you buy good tools to start with you want regret it. But if you buy cheap tools you'll end up buying the good ones too. That my two cents.

My suggestion would be to start out with 4-5 tools, and add on as the need arises. You can do a lot of carving with the following tools:

12mm 60 degree Vtool
12mm #7 gouge
12mm #3 gouge
6mm #7
6mm #3

My choice for mallet tools is Stubai. Pfeil makes a fine tool for carving basswood, but when you use a mallet and move to harder woods, Stubai really stands out. Check out http://www.stubaidirect.com.

Good Carving,
Dan Heine

There's a nice set of Ashley Iles (or Isles, check both) on ebay now! I love mine!
