It might depend on what form of carving you are doing. A blank for a relief would be a plain square or rectangle. A blank for a chip carving could be round, square . . anything. A blank for a walking stick, waterfowl, or greenman . . .? Be specific.

Are you talking roughouts or bandsawn blanks? Either way, I don't know of anyone offering it as a service.

You might check with www.heineckewood.com they create custom rough-outs. They also sell some of the BEST basswood in the country.

There is a difference in a "blank" and a "roughout".

A roughout is a copy of a 3D carving. It may not be complete but alot of the carving is done. It requires a master piece to make the duplicates from. It cannot be done from a picture.

A blank is closer to a 2D cutout. There can be more cut away so it may not be truly 2D. This can be done from a picture.

It would help if you explained what you want to carve.

The more simple blanks I saw were those from Marv Kaisersatt.

See there for more Cutouts and Roughouts - Woodcarvers Warehouse.COM

You can make those yourself.

And then, you can also go 3D like these from Harley Refsal

From there Beginner Wood carving Kits from quality Basswood cutouts for carvers of all ages.
