Default MAINE Carving attractions

My wife has a conference in Camdem, Rockport, Rockland Maine area Oct 15-16 and I get to tag along. I'll have two whole days to enjoy Maine by myself. Anybody have any favorite WOOD CARVING oriented sites you would recommend within 100 miles or so. Art, sculpting, wood carving museums, stores, exotic wood, lumber mills (not sure how much lumber I can get in a carry on but I'll try.) Thanks, Lar

MDI Woodcarvers Supply

CAPE FORGE

I think, not 100% sure, may be worth giving them a call.

Hi Lar. I envy you. My wife and I both love Camden Maine. It's our favorite vacation spot although we haven't been there for a few years. Enjoy! Paul

Hi Lar,
You're only going to be about ten miles from the Maine State Prison Showroom; I can assure you there are several awesome carvings to look at and/or purchase there...in fact, the life-size motorcycle carving in the window of the store was done 100% by me while I was incarcerated a few years back. I don't particularly like that my work is associated with prison but thankfully that's behind me now and I'm currently working on establishing my own carving business along with a good friend/partner. Anyway, if you're in the area you should check out the store, its pretty cool. Here's the site: Maine DOC Industries And just for the heck of it here's mine too. Rodz Custom Creations | Winthrop, ME 04364
On the first page of my site you'll see the life-size carving of Neptunes Ride that's on display at the Prison Showroom; its carved 100% from wood and I also did all the painting/airbrushing myself. Enjoy your trip to Maine!

Visit the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport. Chris Pye comes over from Englad every summer and teaches wood carving there, and they have a gallery with exhibits.

check out the Wendell Gilley Museum in SouthWest Harbor as well. It's a couple hours up Rt 1, close to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. You won't regret it!

Thanks everyone! I have been on vacation since the 16th and couldn't check the site. It looks like I can fill a weekend pretty well. I really appreciate the suggestions, you have saved me a lot of legwork/computer time looking these things up. Maybe I'll take an empty suitcase and bring back some wood and/or carvings.
