I was reading a old magazine lastnight and it showed how to build a knife protecter. It was a plan on using wood glued together with a magnet glued on the inside of the wood. My question is ( Will Magnets Harm My Wood Carving Tools ) ???? And is there another way to protect my carving knives when they are in my carving box ???? Thanks for helping out a fellow carver..

No. You have nothing to worry about.

It does not hurt them a bit. I have been using protectors like you describe, with the magnet, for over 10 years on Helvie and Shipley knives. They work just fine. The blades may become slightly magnetized. You can get a demagnetizer at Harbor Freight if it bothers you. If you don't want to use the magnets, a thin piece of leather inside works good also. |

The only thing about magnetized blades is when you have to sharpen them the metal filings will collect on the cutting edge making it harder to see what you are trying to do. The remedy is easy of course, just wipe it off, lol. I sharpen a lot of tools, and when I get on a ''good run'' and run into a tool in this shape,it slows me down. I feel better getting that off my chest ![]() As far as protecting your tools, a good friend of mine and I put our heads together on a box for carrying and protecting us and our tools back in the mid 90's and he built this awesome tool box for me complete w/ swinging doors that open up and... Well, to make a long story short...I love it. I have a vid on YouTube if you would like to take a look. Nothing like options ![]() ^ l l { l\l |

Proper storage of fine tools is a must.To reduce unnecessary damage, the use of tool rolls and tool holders is recommended. So,I don't think it could affect the carving tools..at all!

You can also try clear plastic hose it comes in diferent sizes so it can be used on just about any tool. I just cut the hose to the lenght i need and slip it over the blade and force onto the handle a little. Been using this for years. Should be able ot get it at any hardware or farm supply store.
