I like the idea, my godmother is a hair syltist I might make her somthing like that. The finish looks to shiny, what did you use on it? For an item such as this I would have used beeswax, my all around favorite finish food safe, friendly to the enviroment, and plentyful since our neighboors raise bees.

This one was finished with clear gloss lacquer, 5 coats. I wanted him to catch light and glow.

Thanks for looking!

Well I think he turned out great! I like that you left him natural...looks good in mama's hair!
I think that your choice of finish is ideal. As a hair toy maker I have tried all finishes. I use loads of oak and I know that it can be quite pourous. It actually needs a laquer or it will grab your hair.
CTFN-if you do make one consider the grain and your sealant. A lot of times I epoxy the tips and shaft just to fill any miniscule grains that may work loose. Then sand it smooth and seal. Also, if it is only an oil seal, women cannot put it into wet hair. Thats how I twist up, while its damp, and that raises the grain.
Buckskin-is that tip squared or pointed? The more you make, the thinner the shaft of it will be. Great first stick-I can see why she claimed it!

Keoma, what would be the drying time in that case?

Nice job Buckskin. Man I can't imagine carving that out of oak as it is so darn hard. You did good.
