Default Looking for Walnut or Mahogany Plaques

A carving friend is looking for Walnut and Mahogany plaques for mounting his carvings. Does anyone know of a source (I'm drawing a blank)? I've done a google search but didn't really find what he's looking for; solid wood, routed egde, no finish, about 8x10 or 9x12 oval. I can't remember seeing them in the catalogs either (although I might be experiencing another senior moment ).

I have not seen any hardwood rounds available in the carving catologs. You may check with a trophy store or a local cabinet shop who can make them. The easiest and cheepest way would be to find someone who can use a router and make your own.

I bought a bunch at a site called scientific surplus I think its www.sciplus.com but not sure...they have all kinds of neat things and one was a bunch of bases for those glass domes you buy to protect whatever, they were a buck apiece as I remember..but not sure if they have them now? Won't hurt to try..interesting stuff anyway! Oh about the bases, they have a routed slot where the dome sat , but not a problem, to use for a bird or whatever and if you do a scene on it, you don't see the top of the base anyway!

Contact a company that makes trophies and award plaques. I have several service awards that were brass plates pinned to a nice walnut plaque. As soon as I remove the brass, they are going to get carved!

Little Shavers has a reasonably good stock of display items, pop off an email to
rick@littleshavers.com
explaining what/how many/what size you want. He may have what you need.

Good place for bases:

Blue Ribbon Bases
100k Knickerbocker Ave.
Bohemia, N.Y. 11716

516-244-7027

I suggest you call for a catolg. They have many standard bases, but will aslo make bases to your specs.

Hope this is of help to you.

Hi, Try Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply. www.vandykestaxidermy.com Â*They have a good varity of bases and other items to use for a base for your carving. Also another source to check out is see if there's a sawmill in your area. They may be able to hook you up with some slices of walnut. Good luck in your hunt. Gergie,

P.S. Van Dykes is where I get all my eyes for me bird and fish carvings. Go to the site and request a catalog.
