I'd recommend the book "Letter Carving in Wood" by Chris Pye, published by Fox Chapel Publishing (sponsors of this site). It has 230 pages of information.

Do not overlook "marine carving" Lots of information out there related to ornamentation for boats. Name boards, side boards, stern boards..etc..etc. One of the references I used dealt with "angle of observation" as it related to slanted or reverse curve boat parts. Great info about line of sight and carving techniques for viewing at different angles....for your pub sign.."viewed from below"

Chris Pye's book will give you all you want/need to know about incised letter carving and much, much more. It's a great book. Chris notes that the discipline of carving letters improves one's overall carving. Russ L. |
