Default Looking for tips for Wooden Chain

I looking to do my first chain-link project this summer (don't tell thoses crazy SantaCarverHolics - you know who they are - please).
Whats a good size and style to start with? What's the safest way to cut the 4 rails on the blank - table saw, knife?

The one that I did years ago, was cut with a router, then I separated the links with a knife.

I have only ever used a knife and straight gouges but a router might be pretty handy. The book "How to Whittle the Whimsies of Yesterday" gives the most detailed instructions on chain carving I've ever seen. Written by Jack D. Jackson. He's a "make your own tool" kinda guy. Very interesting book.
