| | Re: looking for spoon patterns I would like to offer some alternatives or some ideas to get your own ideas..I have laid a 1-1/2" fender washer down on paper, to make it look like stacked washers, or so close that one washer is connected to the next one in an overlapping design, or one like a large "G cleft" sign..surf the web..celtic knot spoons can be fun and interesting..take out a pencil and paper and start to doodle ..even if it doenst make any sense..let your imagination take over....bill#1 |

| | Re: looking for spoon patterns Roy, Shirley Adler's book has a bunch of patterns that you see in most carving shows. A lot of librarys have her book. Past those, you can find some on Lora Irish's web site for carving patterns. There is another book of Celtic Love Spoons with about 30-40 patterns. Chip Chats has had a few free spoon patterns over the years as well. Mike |

| | Re: looking for spoon patterns here is my calla lilly, Not so great, I know, I can already see where I messed up the petal some, but I will work that out as I carve.
This is also a large spoon. I will make a smaller one...now that I have it scanned into the 'puter but this pne is already transferred onto a 14" piece of Cherry. Can't wait for the outcome!

| | Re: looking for spoon patterns Most kitchens are loaded with spoons Spatuals and all sorts of utensils.
pick a few interesting ones, trace the outline on a sheet of paper and then sit down and sketch out (modify your tracings) ways to make them more pleasing to the eye.
Most of them have not changed much since man (mankind not gender specifiic)stopped eating with fingers only. So you can't really go wrong, just express yourself.
I understand you saying you can't draw, my skills are limited.
I used to say I could not draw a straight line. Very little is really straight so why sweat that?
In fact Straight is a human concept that is contrary to nature ,let the lines flow.
Those of us that can;t draw, can't because we don't.
Practice and you might surprize yourself.

| | Re: looking for spoon patterns I've been thinking about doing one of these for my wife. I found a few things online with the history and meanings behind the symbols. After reading this post I think I'm going to try to come up with my own design. Maybe a heart with a wrench through it.
Roy I would say think about who the spoon is being made for and look at their interest. Then look for images on the web, I'm always searching google images for ideas. Once you fine the right images you can tape them together and transfer it to another sheet of paper to get the outline.
good luck and keep us posted on what ever design you come up with. |

| | Re: looking for spoon patterns Another idea came to me. Before Computers came into widspread use there was a profession called Paste up Artists. They would cut and paste images or copy for printed materials. If you wanted a Rose in the middle of printed copy you just cut out the outline inserted the rose and adjusted the copy to fit. Take you're traced images as I mentioned before.
Cut flowers or what ever you want on your spoons from Catalogs and magazines and paste them on your outlines. Copy them and fill in the detail lines. My wife works in the specialty advertizing industry and has done that for her intarsia projects and done some impressive pictures using this technique. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
