Default Looking for Rough-outs

I'm looking for an on-line or mail order place where I can buy rough-out's. Â*Mostly I'm looking for caricatures, angels & santas. Â*I should add I don't care if they're 'machined' rough outs, just something blocked out with a bandsaw is fine. I'm saving my pennies for a band saw, but for now a few rough outs will keep me out of trouble. Â*I'd welcome any suggestions of places you've been pleased with. Â*Thanks!!

Many carving supply catalogs carry some, but I think
Rossiter Ruff-Outs,
1447 S. Santa Fe,
Wichita, KS 67211
probably has the largest selection.

Their email is rossiter@infi.net. Site is http://www.roughouts.com.
The catalog cost $3.00

I agree that you should shop around. Almost all of the pros sell rough outs of their work. I would avoid Rossiters. (spelling?) They have a great selection, but lack consistancy & quality.

I have found if you do not like the quality of Rossiters roughouts, they will correct that for you. Not had any problems with their roughouts. I will admit that I usually cut my own out but have use several of Rossiter's roughouts. One was lousy wood and e-maild them that I was not satisfied with it and was sending it back. I recieved and e-mail from Mrs Rossiter taht to keep th roughout and was sending another. At the Tulsa Carving Show this past July, I took the roughout back to them and they was appreciative of my bringing it in and was sorry for the dissatisfaction and gave nme a roughout of another type for my troubles. That is what makes good relationships.

But do agree to shop around for the best quality and best price on roughouts.

I've had good luck with rough outs from Stu Martin.

Plenty of Santas to choose from.

Good luck

I have never had a problem with Rossiter's roughouts. They are very courteous people and willing to help. If there is a stain in the wood, they put it in their discounted box. Anyone is going to get a batch of wood at some point that is hard, etc.

Here are some other sites for you to try:

http://www.bishopwoodcarving.com/

The Bishops are a husband and wife carving team. They do caricatures. They offer roughouts.

http://www.slimswoodshed.com

He offers blanks. I have seen him at shows multiple times. I could not pull up any pictures at the web site to see what he has. Maybe you can contact him to get a catalog.

Gerald and Barbara Sears can be reached at http://www.gnbsearswoodcarving.com

He has many more roughouts than I saw at the website. There are news ones that pop up and old ones are pulled so there is always some change. He does caricatures. They are terrific people and very honest. You should try to take a class from him. I am sure they have a catalog. They supply a nice color handout with the purchase of the roughout of the various views of the finished carving.

Harley Refsal sells blanks. He carves in the Scandinavian flat plane style. You can get his number and address by going to http://www.cca-carvers.org/refsal.html

I have purchased many blanks from him and the wood has been the very best. It is basswood. He has a pamphlet with prices that he can send you.

Here are my definitions of:
blank = wood that is cut out on a band saw in a general shape of the finishes product

roughout = wood that has been put onto a duplicator with router bits 'roughing out' in a more refined manner than the blank, the general shape of the finished carving

The latter saves much more time. Either can create problems if there has been too much wood removed in spots.

Well, that should be enough to get you going for at least a decade. Good luck.

Tony
carving.

Thanks to all who replied. I have quite the list of bookmarks now. In my mind's eye I was looking for 'blanks,' but I've never carved on a true 'rough out' before, so now I think I'm going to try a santa with a cowboy hat rough out instead. Between that and christmas ornaments I should stay out of trouble for a while!
