Looks like you've gotten a good suggestion. It's funny you asked about this because when I read Claude's post about window sill Garden Gnomes over in the Caricature thread I remembered a book about Gnomes that I had. I went and found it and it might serve as inspiration for you to create patterns from. Minding the copyright of course. ;-) It's a called: Gnomes (c) 1979 illustrated by Rien Pourtvliet & text by Will Huygen Not sure if it's still in print or available but the illustrations are wonderful and should generate lot's of ideas that you could work from.
