Hello, Just wondered if anyone knows where I could get a good pattern or even possibly a roughout of a Crucifix? It doesn't need to include the actual cross though. Thanks, Chipper67

How big do you need the body?

Hello Mark, Thanks for responding. I was thinking in the range of 10" to 15". Chipper67

What you might want to consider is to take a regular photograph of one you like from the front and side view ,print it and then simply blow it up to make your patterns from. If you don't have a copier just go to any staples or kinko's and do it.If it gets too big for one sheet of paper,,just make sections and tape them together,,I've done them up to 2 feet or so this way. To make them bigger I take sketches to a blueprint company and blow them up to 3 ft X 6 ft. I did an entire mantle sketch this way,6ft X 5 ft for about 5 bucks. You could also borrow a crucifix from a friend and take all the measurements from that and adjust them as necessary ,,and you have a handy model for reference to work from. Don't know if there are any religious shops in your town,,Guild is a popular one,,check them out,,or get some religious calendars for reference. They also carry some lines of cross that are very inexpensive. For a pattern all you really need is the basic profile and you might give that a try yourself. Using the above mentioned references you should be able to get it close enough to start carving from. Here,,many of the details will be refined in the wood and not the pattern. Of course you can't forget the ever popular clay. Do a basic human figure in the position you like( doesn't have to be super detailed if you don't want to) but you can work out the details here and resolve any issues you might have,,and then make paper or cardboard cut outs to follow the front and side profiles to transfer to the wood. |
