Hello: I am looking for a copy of Wood Magazine from February of 1991. It has an article that gives detailed instructions of a Harley Refsal carving project, the typical Norwegian bachelor farmer. I have recently become a fan of Refsals flat plane style and want to do this project if I can find the pattern. If anyone could help me out on this I would appreciate it. Thanks Carving farmer

I don't have a copy of the magazine you are looking for but the pattern for a Bachelor Farmer is in his book Sandinavian-Style Figure Carvng Patterns. No carving instructions in this particular book, but any of his other books do show step by step for similar caricatures. You could most likely purchase the book at Little Shavers (Rick is on this forum) or take a look at http://www.pinewoodforge.com/blanks.html All Refsal books and carving blanks are available for purchase on this site. Guess I could have added Rick's url here too. Smile http://www.littleshavers.com/ OG. Last edited by Old_Gord; 03-26-2006 at 04:43 PM. |

Hope you find one. It was one of the first carvings I ever did with a pattern and directions. Both the carving and the instructions are in storage right now but I do remember how great it was to have my carving look like it was supposed to. |

Being the curious type, I checked out the url Frank C. posted and looked at the index for the magazine Feb 91 issue with the Refsal article. Geez I wouldn't have thought it was a Refsal carving by the description.Red Face description went something like this, Carving project, The Norweigan Bachelor Farmer, A rugged construction toy that lets youngsters scoop up soil, sand and gravel just like the real thing! Maybe the person who wrote that description didn't read the article. OG |

The Norwegian Bachelor Farmer is a character/story from Garrison Keelor's Tales from Lake Woebegone" on the old PBS radio show "the Prairie Home Companion" Don't know if it is still on as I haven't found a PBS radio station here yet. Don
