Default Local classes

I just got into wood carving and i'm having trouble finding any kind of local class where I can learn some techniques on the basics. I live near Greensburg Pa which is located about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. Can anyone help me out to find some local instruction. Thanks

Did you check with your "local" woodworking stores? That's where I found my mentor and she actually learned from someone at Ace Hardware back in the day. Hope you find someone

I haven't heard of local classes, but there is a local carving club. Keystone Carvers meet in Greensburg - used to be the first Monday of the month at the old Todd School just off the bypass for Greensburg. I have some officer names that I will dig up and PM you. You could call and see when the meetings are (I might do that myself). I was a member and they did some carving at the meetings after the business. One member would usually put on a lesson for some particular thing they carve at each meeting. Nice bunch of guys/gals.

I live in Greensburg and might be able to help you - I will PM you my telephone number too.

Claus,
Try Woodburning Tools by Colwood: Carving Clubs
for finding other clubs in PA. Also, check issues of Wood Carving Illustrated to look for shows within driving distance--although I think the ones I remember as being in PA are summer or fall shows. THe most recent issue listed the November show at Penn State's Brandywine Campus and the contact is Jack R at 302-475-2581--he might know of carving folks in your particular area.

Good Luck--I know the Lancaster area has a show and quite a few carvers, but I think that's even farther from you.

Hey,
When I first had an interest in carving, I was working swing shift. So, I couldn't get to a local club meeting. But, what I found was extremely helpful in helping me learn was a Subscription to WCI. (no I don't work for WCI) There is always something in there to light your fire plus resources for tools, books, and carving stock. Now, I like to think I've come a long way from just carving chains. Check it out!
