Talking Lighthouses / Windmills

Hello everyone!
I am new to the forum and new to Carving. (2 months). I am addicted.
I am 26 and can't put my tools down.
I wife is being cool and letting me carve in the apartment.
I live in Miami and have found a "club" that meets on Thursdays, it really fun going and hanging with 12 or so seniors. No offense its just that Miami isn't great for this kind of stuff. There are plenty of younger carvers even in this forum alone, Miami is just too...well Miami.

My question is I haven't seen much on lighthouses and nothing on windmills.
My Father-in-law is a pastor in Omaha and I want to carve him one of the two for Christmas.

I don't know where to start. I like the step by step stuff. I am not yet to the point of carving free hand from a picture in my brain.

Any input is appreciated.

Peace!
desi

Most carvers who carve Lighthouses do so in Cottonwood Bark or in relief.
Lot of patterns taken off of photos or pictures.

Lighthouses can be greatly varried. But susan has some nice classic patterns of the tower type lighthouse. If you check out the Chesapeke lighthouses you will find a lot more types.
You know, I think Lynn has afew carvings with windmills , American stlye. If your thinking of Dutch styled I have seen some, but most Americans would think mostly of a mill being attached to a stream so I would assume not many. Web search might be the best place to check .
