Default Lighthouse and sailboat in bark and some other guy

Here is another bark option. Upper part of carving is lighthouse. Lower portion tries to work with the shape of the wood to form a lighthouse. I personally really like how the color of the cottonwood inner bark contrasts with the bleached outer bark. What do you think?

The other guy is me, pic taken by my wife while we were out at Starved Rock State Park in western IL recently. Great place to walk the woods. Beautiful trees. (Although, not as good as at Turkey Run State Park in IN.)

hi K Karver i like your bark carving. i never really seen bark carvings before looking around on this forum. i have a question i hope you dont mind me asking i am wondering if you have to be more carefull of the dust with bark carving. i have read that some bark and wood is pretty toxic. i read about wenga bark being ground down and used to numb fish for harvesting i think i heard walnut bark is bad to. i wouldnt mind trying some bark carving myself. but but being a bit of a worry wart i thought id ask. chris..

Good morning Chris.

I can't say that I have experienced any difficulty. I have not heard of any problem with cottonwood dust. I also have to say that I do not create much dust with the cottonwood, no sanding, no power tools, so very little dust.

I am not the expert to ask. And I too would be interested in what others have to say. I have heard of some of the wood you mention and their danger. Now I am going to look for a thread on dangerous woods and dust.

Rick Jensen would be someone we want to kick in on the cottonwood. He has done it for many years. Or is someone going to pitch in and tell us that explains Rick and his behavior to them. {{Rick, we really do like your work }}

That's the best I can do for you Chris. Hope you find answers and a good piece of bark.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the looksee Kathy and Lonnie. Kathy, it still amazes me how many different shades of red/brown/gold/cream come out of cottonwood bark. Always is exciting to cut into. Lonnie, that last image used to look a whole lot better. Need to work on it some more.
