How do you people lay out the pattern (like a figure) on the wood? And when you Band Saw do you cut out the front view or the side view first?Thank you

If your asking about Bird Patterns, I cut the side view out first. Then I carefully tack the top view back on, making sure the nails are clear of the band saw cut (usually) :-[. Then cut out the top view.

Hugh,
Thanks for your reply. But on a bird it is more or less easy to know to cut the side view.It is more complicated on say a caricature of a figure with left & right sides that are different.
I have read where some carvers cut the front view and some the side. That is what I would like to know .(This is after I have carved over 400 carvings. Thanks

sam -i will usually look at the pattern and try and decide which side or front will be easiest to cut second.
I recently asked the same question while attending a seminar on caricature carving and the answer i got was that they only cut the side profile. the speaker also mentioned the some caricature carving books only give you one view usually the side.

I only cut from whichever side the picture or drawing I'm using is. I have never tried using a real pattern for anything.

even if I start with only one view I try to project it out to make the other. then I saw out the simplest view that will come off in the fewest pieces because I will glue them back on to saw the other view... why glue back on more than you have to? As far as the glue I use hot melt, a trick I learned several years ago on another board from a fine lady and carver named Bette. The glue doesn't soak into the wood and a firm twist seperates the pieces.

Hey Dave, the glue is a great idea. Lot easier on the band saw blades if I make a slip. Thanks

Sam sorry about the goof-up I hit the wrong key as you can see, anyway I use a double sided tape, that works really well for me.

Double sided tape, I never would have thought of that, what a great idea!! I have until just recently bandsawed only one way, leaving all the rest to be removed by hand, that's a pain! I taped the last couple pieces back together and bandsawed from the other side, really makes it easier. Just have to be careful not to remove TOO MUCH! Callynne
