I got a package of pre-formed corks from Woodcraft. On a couple of my smaller bottlestoppers, I've used some miniature corks from a fly fishing shop that are used for making poppers for bluegill. I've also used wine bottle corks by cutting them to length, drilling with a forstner bit in my drill press, and then sanding them to a cone shape by gluing them on the dowel, chucking the dowel in the drill press, and then sanding down the spinning cork.

Thaks, all, for the comments!
Claude

Thanks for the tip on finding corks. I once picked up a bunch from the lawn the midway sat on from our county fair. But for the life of me I cannot find that gallon jar I put them all in back. But in my mind the corks I picked up may be too small.

Never too small - you just have to adjust the size of the carving. Here's an example of a carving I did with one of the small flyfishing corks. This cork measured around 1/4 inch diameter - I used a 1/8 inch dowel to fasten it to the carving.

[edit] Forgot to mention...pattern for the Scot (Irish?) bottlestopper is from the book "Tom Wolfe Carves Wood Spirits and Walking Sticks" [/edit]
