Does that count?
I prefer small carvings, but have carved a couple of relief signs at about 3 sq ft. As far as "in-the-round" - I would guess one or two around 18" tall. Other than those, I suppose it would be all under 12". I have been on a miniature kick lately. I love carving 2" figures. Sometimes I stretch them to 3" - but they stay very "skinny".

| | Re: What is the largest thing you have carved? As most of you know I havent done many small carvings most of mine are fairly big these two are probably a couple of the biggest. The spirit pole was done in pine and the woodspirit was done in maple. I didnt measure the spirit pole but probably around the 20 ft mark.

| | Re: What is the largest thing you have carved? My largest piece was a 30" stylized cat for a college art class - many years ago. Still have the cat. As many others have said, I am also 'into' small carvings, but also do up to about 10-12" regularly.

| | Re: What is the largest thing you have carved? Colin that is a super fantastic carving. Will that kill the tree, or will it survive?? Stupid question I suppose, but it looks like something I would like to see done on a big spruce behind my house.
My biggest project was a life size Bald Eagle, had to build a cradle to hold it while doing the feather detail. |

| | Re: What is the largest thing you have carved? Well Hugh,
Colin assured me when we started the article that it wouldn't kill the tree...if he's wrong, I'm going to have a lot of people mad at me at the end of the summer when the trees they carved in die off

| | Re: What is the largest thing you have carved? Hugh, No it shouldnt kill the tree if done properly when you read my article in WCI this issue it will explain it better. There is never any garantee that the tree will not die. It depends on a whole lot of factors as explained in the article. I dont want to quote the article here until you have had a chance to read it. Oak trees are always regarded as strong but sometimes they are not as strong as everyone would think and are quite susceptable to desease.
