Default Large stock removal for box

Hello all!

I am trying to plan for carving a box from a single piece of ambrosia maple and am curious as to what the consensus is regarding best methods of waste wood removal. I have a rotary tool and gouges, but that's about it. Any suggestions on the best way to remove the internal wood that takes up what will ultimately be the empty space of the lidded box?

Thanks!

Drill - better yet, drill press with a large bit.

Depending on what you have to work with, i would say the same as Mitchell... drill, or if you are careful... router, or an adze... it depends if your cutting cross grain, with the grain, perpindicular to the grain, angular or pare cut....etc...

You may also try using a router with a mortising bit.

I've been reading a lot about "band saw boxes". They look pretty easy to make. I want to get a band saw just to try it out

For truely elegant bandsaw boxes, go to the forum in the Australian Wood Work Forums. Flocked drawers and all.
www.woodworkforums.com/ and find the bandsaw box forum.
Best method I have:
Draw the perimeter of the inside of the box. Leave 1/4" - 3/16" all around inside ( Gouges later.) Go down 1" with a 3/4" Forstner bit to honey comb the waste. The holes don't have to touch. Knock out the resulting web between the holes and tidy up with a firmer chisel.
Repeat as often as necessary.
Last run = stop short of the final depth you need, the mark from the center pin of a Forstner bit is HARD to get rid of.
