Default Lapping

Help! How can I get the back of a plane iron lapped to that nice mirror finish it needs? I know what it's supposed to look like, but I can't get it there. Is there some kind of lapping kit I don't know about? ???

I use a cotton buffing wheel loaded with white buffing compound and a tad of patience.

try 2000 or better grit sandpaper on a piece of glass or plexiglass, and keep it flat.
