Any suggestions on the glue......is glue color a problem....I know something like Gorilla Glue is dark.. In the past, laminating wood has not been a problem because most of the pieces were painted.. The butternut will be left natural, so my concern

When I was making ukuleles I made a couple with a 'skunk' stripe up the neck and others with 'built-up' necks. These were all natural grain finish. I used Titebond Original which is favoured by modern luthiers for it's strength plus it dries absolutely clear. I think the secret is keep it thin and clamp it well. If the two surfaces are absolutely flat you can sometimes get away with a rubbing joint. Place the two surfaces together with glue applied to one surface and rub the two back and forth with small movements. After a few seconds you will feel the two starting to 'bite' and get harder to move. Leave them in their aligned position and they'll bond securely without clamping. Violin makers sometimes use this method when 'bookmatching' a piece for the back of the violin. Hope this helps a little.
