Default What kind of wood do I use?

I'm wanting to make a family name plaque to hang up when we go camping, I have some 1x12 cypress boards that I can join together or should I try another type of wood. Also what should I seal the wood with to weather proof it?

I think cypress would be okay. My brother has a sign made of plywood with walnut lettering glued to it, but he hangs it from his 5'er hitch. Just make sure you keep a good all-weather finish on it, maybe a marine finish. I've not been able to find a finish that will last longer than a year or 2.

I agree with "Cutup". Cypress should work just fine. If you clean it up prior to carving or woodburning you can leave it unfinished and let it age naturally, or if you want to you can coat it with 3-4 coats of Spar Urethane.
