I bought some wood at home depot, not for carving but fora project. I was sawing some of it and its really soft and its white and the grain is similar to Bass wood. Thought I'd take a piece and carve on it. It carves really close to bass wood just a tad bit harder. Can it be white pine? |

The HD here sells Aspen- white and soft, not amber like pine. Less grain than pine, typically too.

A friend of mine carves northern white pine from Maine. He prefers it to Bass. Dave |

I was told that sugar pine carves like spanish cedar, one of my favorites, but so far i have not been able to get my hands on any.

I'm pretty sure you have a piece of Aspen.

Sounds like Poplar to me.

This is northern white pine: This is poplar: Northern white pine is lighter in color while poplar can have some greenish or brownish tints depending on how much heartwood is in it. The sapwood is lighter in color.

I have bought Aspen from Home Depot to carve. I have only found 3/4 inch to be the thickest available. Not bad to carve. Steve Brown Woodcarving |

without a picture - it's tough to tell. Depending on what part of the country your in could narrow it down as Home Depot - a national chain, receives a good part of it's specialty woods from local mills. ??? My money is on sugar pine.
