Default Kick'n back Sunday...daily thread 3/14/04

Good morning all! How about joining me for coffee & donuts this morning...and a little chatter...
I've got some fish I carved (yes, from a few years ago) from one of Hillman's books. Â*Can someone tell me what size glass eye I should use for a 8' fish? Â* Thanks in advance...
So what are ya'll up to today? :

Speaking of him, here is his website I found yesterday: Â*http://68.44.220.125/HillmanArtNet/Default.aspx Â*

Or try : http://Â*www.hillmanart.com ....

I clicked on the website you have there and was unable to get on. I'm having a cup of coffee right now. I just heard Krispy Kreme is coming out with low carb donuts. You must only eat the hole I figure.

for some reason on this site you have to put the http:// before the address for it to highlight and be able to click on it.

Default I just added that to the 2nd thread...

It didn't highlight, but you can always paste it to your browser, or just type in hillmanart.com & it should work.

What kind of fish do you need the eyes for? Different species require different sized eyes.

Default Gee Al, I was afraid someone would ask ...

These fish are just for fun, ...would really like to get into making some folk art'sy kind ...I use the term loosely because I want them to look nice, FUN, but also carved nicely. Some people whip stuff out and it looks real crude - then they call it 'Folk Art' to try to impress people. I've been looking on ebay and there is a fish decoy carver there by the name of McEvers ...I REALLY like his carvings...I would love to do something like that. Anyway back to your question about what kind of fish...
I need to figure out where my book is to know for sure what kind of fish, but for now lets just say it's a Brook trout...or something along that line...these won't necessarily be painted like the real thing so the eye color won't matter.

Generally, for a trout (most species) you would use a 6mm eye for an 8'fish. Â*You might even go to an 8mm eye for an exaggerated look.

A good way to estimate size, if you are doing your own patterns is to pick up one of those circle drafting templates at an art store or college book store. Â*It will have about a hundred different sizes, all marked in fractional inches, decimal inches and mm. Â*You can then mark the size you are contemplating onto the blank or pattern with a pencil and see how it will look. Â*Or if your pattern has an eye drawn on it but no size indicated, put the template over the eye and read the size from the template.

this works weel if you are making a pattern from a photo, too. It lets you get the exact size you need without guessing.....just put the template over the photo.

Hope this helps.

Al
