Title: Kathy’s Kachina Doll
Size: 8 Inches Tall on Cottonwood Limb Base
Cottonwood Limb

Hi All, my first attempt at carving a Kachina Doll. Lot’s of mistakes made but hopefully they don’t show too much. LOL the body and all attachments were carved from a Cottonwood limb with the exception of the feathers and ears. They were carved from a couple pop cycle sticks.
Probably the most challenging was carving and attaching the arms/hands. I’m not real great at angles so I had to work extra hard to make them look right. I did use a toothpick to help strengthen the arms to the body along with Elmer‘s wood glue. I used acrylic paints for the body and accessories color.
My only regret is that I didn’t do a very good job on carving the hands. But will do better on the next one.
It has taken me about four weeks working at my leisure to carve my kachina.
As always I appreciate your thoughts about my carving and your comments for improvement.

Kathy, I really like your Kachina. It is carved and painted in the traditional style. I am curious as to which of the Kachina's it represents. The closest I could come to identification is "Peeping Out Man" with the green case mask, red ears and tube mouth.

I don't know much about Kachina as I never have been to China,ehehehehehehehehehehhe.
Nah Kathy, that is a great looking Kachina doll or carving.
Like the colors and the finely carved feathers. A lot of carvers cop out and add real feathers but you stepped up to the plate and carved them, OUTSTANDING!!!
All I can say is WOW, EXCELLENT, FABULOUS,FANTASTIC,
Yep Gal, Ya done real good.
My hat is off to an excellent carver.

Looks great Kathy.....now you have to carve....how many 100's now to make a complete set? ha ha

Very nice Kathy, which Kachina is he, he looks like a mudhead Kachina. I like them also, my favorite Kachina Carvers are the Hopi carvers, and favorite kachinas are probably the Owl Kachina and Eagle dancer. Again nice carving.

Kathy excellent Katchina doll I dont see any mistakes at all I think it is wonderful carving. That would look a lot better in my native collection

Katchina's are your interpretation and just because it has no hands I think it looks great the way you have done them. Again a wonderful, wonderful carving.

I don't know too much about Kachina dolls, but looks like a fine job to me. Very nice carving especially the feathers. As already stated, you didn't cop out on the feathers. Very nice carving and painting.

Hi Paul, thank you for your nice compliment. Yes, my kachina is based on the Hopi 'Peeping Out Man' (NA-UI-KUI-TAKA) third mesa, which as I understand is part of the 'Corn Kachina Dolls.' I didn't add the hand accessaries because I did such a poor job of carving the hands.

WOW, thank YOU Kenny--I don't know a lot about them either--I have always wanted one, but couldn't afford the $$$$$$$$$.
Actually it's the wonderful colors that attracted me to this particular doll. I found carving the feathers the easest part of the whole thing. After I carved them I burned in the feather design with my woodburner. For feathers I drilled holes in the top-knot and head to receive the feathers. Thanks again, for your nice compliment too.
