| | JUST A THOUGHT Since its inception a few years ago, this BB has inspired a lot of carvers - many of whom were 'closet carvers' before joining the board. The messages here only substantiate what I have believed for a long time - All carvers are friendly!
I have never met a carver that was not willing to share whatever he/she knew about the art, and even the grumpy ones love to tell you what they know. Carving has so many diversities - caricature, birds, animals, etc. - that there is a subject for nearly anyone's interest.
Thanks to this BB and a great mag like WCI, all of you can reap and gain info for whatever your needs. Although I have carved for more than two decades, I still learn something new each time I check this board. Too bad we can't record all this into an encyclopedia.
My personal thanks to all who participate in sharing their knowlege of carving. Hopefully, this will instill some young'ns to try this rewarding art. We old sots are not going to be around forever and new talent is always welcome.
Now that I have finished ramblin' let me say that the ornament exchange is a fabulous idea. How can we expand this to get more carvers involved?

| | | Re: JUST A THOUGHT Thank you, pinefeathers...those are some great thoughts you have - and you've said it so well on behalf of all of us. I think we all feel that way.
As for the ornament exchange, I've taken my quest for other carvers' ornaments 'on the road'....asking every carver I meet anywhere around this worldwide carving community to do an ornament exchange with me. I'm having fun with it, and getting some very interested (and interesting) responses.
I do hope more people on this board get involved with it, as well...I know that I, for one, would like to have a bit of each of you on my 'carvers tree' by next Christmas!

Your thoughts sum up what a carving club, 'The terbo Termites Power Carvers' is all about.

| | | Re: JUST A THOUGHT Well I have been exposed. I was a 'closet carver' up until a year or so ago when I found this list. As a matter of fact I just today got my first issue of Chip Chats. What was I waiting for? I got started years back when I watched the old Rick Butz series on TV. I recorded them all on tape and still have them. But as you say, this is a great place to come and learn, share, or just enjoy the company. I think I still am a closet carver to an extent, but I am getting better.

| | | Re: JUST A THOUGHT I carved for 25 years with just E.J.Tangerman and Ben Hunt to inspire me. I didn't think this internet was good for anything; until I saw all the carvers using it to share their knowledge. |

| | | Re: JUST A THOUGHT Boy, you're all so right - I never thought I'd find the knowledge, skill, encouragement and friendships that I have found throughout the online woodcarving community. What a pleasant surprise it's been every step of the journey. I look forward to eventually getting to know some of you in person someday.

| | Re: JUST A THOUGHT The feelings expressed here really show up at carving shows and clubs. Sometimes I get a little gun-shy about asking questions, since most people will take a lot of time to answer. Sometimes you don't even have to ask. We had our local carving show last weekend; over 60 carvers showing their work and carving for two days. Attendance seems to be better every year and we've added carvers to the point we have a waiting list for a spot. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
