Just some knotheads

Here are some hemlock knots that I have recently carved.People always ask how long does it take to carve that.So from smallest it took 2hours, the next biggest took 3 hours and the largest took 5 hours.It was purly an expermient and I just wanted to see what I could do.Hemlock is very flaky and hard so you have to go deep.I have not posted any carvings in a while because I am planning a big move to Montana from where I live here in N.Carolina.Anyway, here they are.Davy

Nicely done Davy. I really like these guys. How do you get the knots to carve anyway? I've always liked the Pine Knots I've see carvings in, but have no idea how to find or where to buy.

So that's a big move. Would love to head out west myself someday, but somehow I think the market for IT PMs & Business/Functional Analysts for web projects is pretty slim out there. ;-)

Davy, you have quite a nack for carving those knotheads. I can't understand where you find them all. Found wood gives a carving a special look and you have found your niche. Good luck with your move.

Thank you all for your kind comments.As for finding the knots it is not that hard if you have the appalachian forest in your back yard.I usually get them from a fallen tree.The tree will decompose a lot faster than it's own knot which was an old branch.I usually find an old hump in the ground and a little something sticking out of the hump.I start pulling on it and out comes the knot along with other critters.If the tree is really rotten then you have a better chance of pulling the knot out with no problems.I travel with a bow saw or a macheddy(spell check) just in case.Anyway you can find some unique characters down deep if you want to get a little dirty.Thanks again and I hope this helps if anyone wants to search for knots.I take my dogs with me because once I find a stick comming out of the ground I point as if there is a mouse or something and the dogs get excited and start digging.I didn't mean to drag this on.DavyThank You

I really like looking at the knotheads, Thanks for sharing. I have started keeping a bowsaw in the car looking for cottonwood, never thought of looking for knots will start checking it out.

Knot-heads?? I will sure miss my knot-head carving friend when you move!! I have always amired your knot head carvings,I know all too well how hard they are to carve! Next summer we will drive out and I bring a U-Haul filled full of mtn laurel! heheee I know you are hunting laurel & hemlock roots to take with you when you move! I know too,you will miss the bat cave & the cook stove. Theses 3 knot-heads look great Davy~ as all of your carving does. Forrest~
