I know everyone has their own level of skill and dexterity, but I am curious. How many projects do you carve at the same time? How much time a day do you carve? and how long (on average) does it take for you to finish a piece? As most of you I'm sure, I have the problem, so many ideas/projects, so little time. Thanks, Steve |

Hi Steve, For me, I usually have 2 or 3 projects going at the same time. I only get to carve maybe once or twice a week, plus I volunteer time carving about once a week at Berkshire Carousel for a few hours there. It can be nice to have an in-the-round carving and a relief carving for a little diversity. Mark |

I usually have about two or three going at one time... But only get to carve when I get the "honey-do-lists done... But, I never tell her when I take a day of vacation till the morning of, that doesn't give her much time to give me anything to do... then I get to carve all day... this happens probably few times a month.. 1 or 2 projects. I try to carve at least an hour or so per day, sometimes more. ![]() Dave |

About 6 or 7 pieces going at once, some get put aside for weeks while they stew in my head, and I carve everyday, sometimes for 8 hours or so. I have taxes to do now, so I'm distracted, plus, I'm getting ready for a couple of shows. I spent all day yesterday cleaning my displays, easels, and refinishing my table. Christina |

I have long term projects, medium terms, and fast ones. I like to do many carvings at the same time because I get tired easily of working on the same thing for too long. I also like to practice some techniques on small pieces before I do them on bigger ones. Gilles |

I started out over 30 years ago with ambition to finish my project and I wanted to carve extreme detail. Today if a project takes me more than 8 hours I will start another. I can produce extreme detail or I did, I just don't want to anymore. I can carve you a life size resemblance of Abe Lincoln in less than 4 hours a Jesus bust around 2 hours. Speed is my thing I get them done before I get bored that's just me.

I try to carve about at least 1 hour a day.......89.6% of the time I'm working on one project at a time......unless I'm carving something else too....lol Jim Q

I mostly carve small projects that take an hour or two, at most. Although those little dogs carved from oak, maple, or other hard woods sometimes take a bit longer. I try to carve an hour or more every day. The nice thing about the little projects is that I can finish one in a single session. I typically have one of those little carvings going, and two or three other, larger, carvings that I work on from time to time. All depends on if I need a quick fix (i.e. finish something), or if I feel like putting time into doing something completely new and different.

Counting everything - active projects, set-asides, and hot ideas - I may have five going at a time. But if you're talking tool-to-wood, I seldom have more than two a day. This is driven entirely by my creative urges, because I don't sell any carvings or enter shows where there might be a deadline.
