I just did a couple of carvings for a retirement gifts. one is a pistol case (skull and Cross bones)the other is a humidor, My former humidors I did not get the finish thick enough I compensated on this one and I think it made it look cheap. I probably should have used semi or satin finish.

You could get a thousand different opinions from a thousand different people on the finish. It looks fine to me. I really like the curly maple at the edge of both pieces. What is the primary wood? Nicely done.

I like them! Having said that, there is a spray can of stuff that will make the finish satin, even though it's now gloss - can't remember the name of the stuff, but I suspect the local home improvement store paint department could identify it. Claude |

Looks like lots of work went into both. I, too, like the border of contrasting wood. You can dull down a gloss finish by spraying a coat of Matt or Satin over the top of the existing finish. It's the top coat that shows up the most. Lucky recipients to have a friend who cares enough to put time and energy (and talent) into making something for them. A part of you goes with each gift. The primary wood is cherry, I like to use Cherry for the relief carvings. It holds detail really good, the only downside is it is hard. My second favorite for this stuff is Walnut. I normally use deft spray cans to finish but this time I used Brush on deft . I will go back to the spray on on the brush on it says do not thin but to me it really needs thinning.
