Default Jeff Phares books

Jeff Phares has 4 or 5 books that deal with carving the face that look interesting.

For those who have the books, I'd be interested to hear what you think of them.

I found the books good and I suggest to give them a look before you buy, by looking at them in your local library, and if they don't have them, ask for them through inter-library loan.

I have two of his books, the main one carving the human face, and Carving Eyes. They're good books that give you everything you need to carve good realistic faces. I think that a beginner may have a little trouble following the step by step the frist time through the book. But like I said they're good books and I've learned a lot from them.

If your library dosn't have them check with the closest carving club. I understand that most clubs keep a small library of woodworking\carving books. Just an idea.

I think Jeff is a fantastic carver and I have two of his books which I use as reference even though I don't carve in the realistic style. I'd suggest you buy the first one on heads before buying the others on eyes, ears, etc. While the others go into depth on these areas the first book also covers them pretty well.

I have two of his books, the Eyes and Noses and the Faces.
Great books but I have yet mastered his style. Well even attempt to.

Myself, I like Rex Branson better. To bad he don't have many books out. His wife Vichy is a great carver also.
JMHO!

I also have all the Phares books and think they are great. Another carver/author with some good books is John Burke. Great for doing the Native American and mountain men. Harold

I have all of Jeff's books they are just what you need if you are carving realistic faces. Not only that but I had the privilage of taking one of his courses that was run here in Canada. He is also a great teacher.
