Default I've got a "CARVIN-VICE" . . . . . .

I received this Carving vice as a gift from a Senior carver in my club. He is a retired welder and I'm sure he'd spent many a Government hour building this. It has two axis and locks into position tight. Came with an extra base plate also. I'm going to mount it to a stump for carving out by the pond.

Hi Dennis - My one thought is that the vise might be top heavy if you mount it to a stump. It looks like it's meant to hold large pieces of wood. If you have a large piece of wood on there and you angle it out from the stump, it might fall over. That could be dangerous. The solution would be to mount it to something with a larger "footprint" than the stump provides. Just a thought! Let us know how the stand works for you.

I have a carvin' vice too! It doesn't make me drunk, it doesn't give me communicable diseases, I don't have to go outside so as not to offend those that don't imbibe, and they don't arrest you for having it! They don't ever consider taxing it like all the other vices when they enact sin taxes either. But, alas, it isn't sexy enough to have a TV program named after it like Miami Vice.

I'm addicted, much the same, though.

HaHa - I think most everyone on here has a carvin vice, don't they? Some vices are a good thing!

I don't know if you see the top-heavy issue I mentioned above as a problem or not, but when I wrote that post earlier, I didn't really have a solution. I have one that might work for you now. If the stump is sitting on the ground, you could try pounding 2 or 3 metal stakes into the ground and then anchoring the stump to them.

LMiller - Now I did say "stakes" and not "steaks". Using steaks wouldn't be a vice, but it sure would be a crime.

The stump in question is out by my pond and still attached in the ground. Not the one displayed under the vice. That one is my foot stool near my favorite chair. The vice will be moved indoors this fall and attached to my carving bench. Can't stand to be kept indoors when the weather permits though. All in all, It was free and should work for me quite nicely. Thanks for the comments.

Freebies are always good! I'd be interested in seeing a picture of how you use it. All I have is my little black and decker thing and want to buy or have somebody fabricate a better vice for me to use.
