Default Interesting Woodspirit!

I found this carving in a local craft mall. In the bottem corner is the guys sig. with a penny placed in a drilled hole. The penny is dated 1983. My guess is it's to indicate the date it was made. Any other guesses as to why it's there? I love to collect other peoples work when I can afford it. I thought I found a minor treasure for $5.00.

I have a book with this wood spirit pattern in it. I would imagine that the penny does indicate the date of the carving. Still a treasure though

Using a penny to date a project is quite common in woodworking.

But why a pyrographer or carver would use this method is a mystery to me.

IMO, the penny & signature should of been placed on the back of the piece as it pulls the eye away from the subject.

That particular woodspirit is a pattern from Harold Enlow's book on Driftwood Carving. Looking at the carving I dont believe that Harold carved it I think it is a copy of his pattern.

Gergie, my guess would be the same as yours 'to date the carving'. Interesting and thanks for sharing.
