Default An Interesting Stick!

I just posted a couple pictures of a twisted aspen stick I found while hunting yesterday. Â*I've seen these before but they have all been quite large...up around 6' in diameter. Â*This particular one is about 1 1/2' dia but only about 3 feet long. Â*There are a few other larger ones (longer) and after Thanksgiving I think I'll take a hike back in there and get a few more. Â*They are aspen whips, that grew from a clear-cut and had wild grapes take hold at the same time. Â*The grape vines wound around the saplings as they grew and eventually the vines became encased in the aspen wood. Â*Besides the twisting spiral, there is a section of very distinctive reddish undebark that follows the spiral up on one side. Â*should be some neat material to work with. Â*All I did with this one so far is peel the live bark so it will dry.

oops...here's the link

That's a nice stick! We have lots of twisted sticks similar to this in our area due to honey suckle vines, but not usually than pronounced. Gene Webb at Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers uses them to carve snakes.

Al that will make a super cane. I have seen some like this before but not that beautiful. Here you find them when the Bittersweet winds it self around the maples. If you turn it into a cane please let us see a picture of it.

Managed to pull another 'twisty-stick' out of the woods yesterday(last day of hunting season, and still no buck!) One of the guys I hunt with got the 'GOOD' stick while I was down in St. Louis, but this one isn't bad at all. Knee deep snow and lots of 'Drop-Down-Your_Neck' snow in the woods, now so any further will probably wait till spring!

Can see why you aren't getting any bucks, you are to busy looking for sticks. :-)

Looks like a great stick. Have fun with it.
