Hi All, Can anyone recommend an instructor who teaches in the Pacific Northwest Native style? I'm looking to deepen my immersion into the carving of masks, totems, artifacts, etc., but I'm at the point where I need some expert, 1:1 instruction. I've been frustrated in my quest by people who haven't been exactly forthright in their willingness to profer help. I guess I wasn't asking the right BC'ers when I visited there last week. Looking for lessons in the PNW; the closer to Portland the better. But I'm not agin driving up to BC to make a week (or two) -long vacation out of it. Adthanksvance, S~

I cannot recommend an instructor in your area as I am from Ontario Canada. However I can sure recommend a good book for you to buy. It is called Carve your own Totem Pole, by Wayne Hill and James McKee. Wayne teaches west coast native style totem carving. I took a 1 week course from him last year and I did not know a thing about carving totem poles and I came out of the course with a 4 ft totem carved all by hatchet and gouges. His book is a step by step carving mask and totems. You should check it out it might be what you are looking for. Wayne Hill is from Ontario Canada

Scooter, Sorry not to see your question sooner. Here is a link to a course given thru Exploritas (the new name for Elderhostel) this August. Exploritas : Pacific Northwest Art: Kwaguilth Culture, Carving and Design - British Columbia - Social Science & Culture It includes workshops in designing and carving objects in the Kwaguitl style, which is similar to the Haida. My wife & I are signed up for it. -Phil Allin

Scooter, Check with Ron Lundy at Cascade Carvers Supply in the tri-cities. He is a master at the masks. Tom |
