Default Instructions for one-piece-knife

Does anyone know where I could get instructions on carving a one-piece-knife like the one in this gallery?

http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...php?photo=4882

Thanks,
Don

Hi-Ho is right. One way to make a knife like this would be to carve the pieces and then assemble with a pin. Mr. E.J. Tangerman wrote a book called Whittling and Woodcarving, chapter 10 is devoted to joints (hinge and pivot). He shows the cuts needed to make this joint from one piece. Your post shows a photo by pallin. I looked up pallin's birthdate and viewed some of his other work. Ball-in-cages, twisted chain etc. My guess is pallin has accumulated a number of whittler tricks up his sleeve in his lifes journey and I would bet a hinged joint might be one of them.

I made this one for my grandson a few months ago. Patrick Speilman had the instructions and pattern in flyer type of newsletter he used to send out. I had it for several years but finally threw it out and wouldn't you know, soon after, my grandson really wanted a knife and as he is much too young for a real one I wanted to make him one.
This is a lockback with Walnut handles and Maple blades and locking lever.
I just drew it up while looking at my own knife. Took a couple of passes but finally got it to work.

I disagree, I had a friend that carved wood chains, he included all kinds of odd ball stuff that would swivel on a wooden pin. So it can be done, but it takes a lot of time. I did about three links of a wooden chain when I first started carving, and it was sooooo boring. But it's differant strokes for differant folks.
