| I was just reading another post and got me thinkin' (okay who said - oh oh there he goes again). Where are some of the more unusual places some of you have carved at - airplanes, fast food restaurants? I must be pretty boring - the best I can come up with is the mall. How about you? p.s. - sorry about the misspelling in the post title.

I do a lot of carving at Doctor's offices, clinics, hospitals and I also carve when I have my vehicles in for servicing. Basically, where ever I am required to spend an hour or more waiting. But, I guess one of the most unusual places I carve, a couple of times a year, is at our local polling station. I am Precinct Captain for this very rural area. The only time I am really busy is before the polls open and after they close. This leaves me with a lot of carving time during the 12 hours allowed for voting. In a presidential election we may see close to 400 voters, in primaries less than 100, and most come in groups of 3-4. If we were a more urban area there probably would be complaints; but, folks around here use the polls as a meeting place, although we are supposed to discourage this, most stay to talk for a while. They also have grown used to me carving and expect to see either progress on the piece I was carving during the last election or the finished piece....along with my present effort. I have a kangaroo type apron for catching chips and have never received a complaint in any of these locations. |

PDX (Portland airport). The thought of having a bag full of sharp (and some were long-bladed) tools in an airport amused me for some reason. It was a demo, so I had permission in advance, but still... S~

Like Paul, all the normal waiting areas: hospital, doctors office, dentist office, in my vehicle, a regular at the mall, those kinds of places. Most unusual, I would have to say, the waiting area of the hospital waiting for my latest grandchild to be born. Probably the longest carve too, and gained the most attention from staff and family alike. Carved a newborn baby asleep on her knees and belly, butt in the air. Bob

A local gallery has a satellite store in the airport. So they did all the arranging, actually. S~

Back before 9/11, I used to fly frequently to DC. I would carve on every flight. The first few times the flight attendants asked me what the heck I was doing. I would explain, and let them know that I wouldn't leave a mess. After that, any time I boarded a flight, one would ask "what will you be working on this time?" Needless to say, that came to a screeching halt after '01. I also regularly carve on my boat when the fish ain't bitin'!

I love to carve ON the beach...(not IN the water...or course) spread out a blanket.....spread out the tools....(spread out a beverage) set the block on the blanket and PRESS HARD so that it sinks into the sand a little....carve away!! salt water environment is not the best for steel....extra maintenance precautions are the order of the day to protect from the salt. Learned the hard way about salt transfer even from the sand on the upper reaches of the beach, where I sit and carve most of the time.... Sitting by the river behind the house while carving is so magnificently peaceful... Must be something about the water.
