Default im'a knucklehead somtimes

thats right ya'll,you heard it here first and i said it myself!! i know somewhere is a thread for spoons and i just plain cant find it ,ANYHOW,,id been afraid to try to carve spoons because i have no power tools, and not much in the way of knives. everything i carve is done with two knives and a flexcut carvin jack,,its all i have.then the other night while flippin through the channels on the bozo box,(im not even sure what the movie was) i saw some pioneer folks talkin bout needin a new spoon and the pa said,"i'll get to carvin you a new one in the mornin" well it got one of my last two braincells to workin overtime, and i thought to myself "they didnt have no power tool or fancy carvin knives back then"..so....i decided to see just what i could make with the limited tools i have,,,no sandpaper, and i even resisted the urge to use the flexcut. just my two lil ole straight knives. they aint much to look at but by golly they would be funtional if'n it was all i had to use!! i guess what im gettin at is ,dont talk yerself outta tryin somthin youve never done cuz ya just might be surprised what ya CAN do!!! reminded me of an old saying
"ive done so much, with so little, for so long, that now i can do almost anything with absolutly nothin!" anyway i hope the pics are viewable, all i got is a cell phone fer a camera. so keep yer fingers outta the way and keep on carvin

I tried to make a spoon with just a knife, and was very disappointed with the result. But seeing what you've done here makes me think I should give it another shot. Good work!

The spoon bowl is clearly the challenge if you're only using straight bladed knives, but you've shown that it IS possible.

Hi Knucklehead,
If you want to make yourself some nice cheap gouges, find yourself a trutemper golf club, cut it up into sections, and then remove the top half of the round shaft for about a 2 inch length. They all end up being number 9 gouges, but you can get a nice little set going. Put a wooden handle on them, and you are ready to make some nice spoons
The grind angle has to be about 35 to 45 degrees, just to keep some strength to the metal, but this is some of the toughest steel you will ever find.. I use one of the hack saw blades with carbide powder on it to get it to last a little longer. Sears sells them.

Good luck. TOM

Those turned out pretty good for the limited tools. You can find some info on spoons in the 'tutorial' forum (carverturnerfromnowhere has made some good ones). Also there is a thread here under the general forum with lots of spoons to look at. It says Spoon Showcase, thread started by Tucker1931. Are you hooked by the spoon bug now?

Hi T Bone,

You did a great job there with just your straight knives.

You did very well with your knives. All those ornate lovespoons from early days were carved with a knife...
