I'm Carving a Pirates Leg

Hi Gang,
I sometimes get unusual commissions, sometimes wifes want me to carve their husbands. Some people want me to carve their dog. Yesterday I recieved a call to carve a life size cigar store Indian123 . Today I recieved a call from a gentleman that wants me to carve a pirates peg leg. Now that is a first, evidently he is having a pirate map made out of leather and he is putting gold and silver in a treasure chest and burying it for his grandchildren. He wants me to carve a pirate leg for what ever reason to place as a marker for the buried treasure. My question does any one have a drawing of a pirates leg, I have never carved one before and he wants it realistic. My aim is always to please my customer but this one has got me baffled and I want to do a good job. Now if I were a pirate I would follow him and see where he buries the treasure.LOLMobster

Well, you have to catch a pirate before you can carve his leg.......

Ha! Colin, I have seen some carvings, but don't remember any actual pictures of a pirate's leg. I carved a pirate a couple of months but his wooden leg did really meet my expectations....mostly because I did not have something to use for reference.

That didn't help, but I had to get my little joke in.

Only thing I know about them is usually wider at the top and narrower at the bottom. Never knew a pirate.

Hadn't tried this so don't know, but have you tried a google search on "Treasure Island" and any other pirate movies you can think of.

Colin, as I recall, well I don't actually recall cuz I am old but not that old, artifical legs in those days were just a piece of conical shaped wood, easy to whittle, hence the name Pegleg.
Here's a couple of shots of my rendition of someone with a naval background who has a Pegleg.

The old ones actually were "peg legs". They were simply a stick/peg with a cup hollowed for the stump and held on with straps. Later they gained splints and were thickened to more resemble a real leg.

Check out a copy of the movie "Moby Dick".....he wasn't a pirate, but his leg sure was carved. Gregory Peck wasn't it?

Interesting commission you got there. Do I see a new idea beginning to blossom, maybe a pirates pegleg with a "sea spirit" similar to a mermaid embelishing it??? It could happen...it could!
