Default If you Could...

If you could spend a day with an experienced carver doing one thing what would it be?

For me, I would spend the day watching and learning how to shape, sharpen, and hone my tools especially gouges, V-tools, and fishtails. I thought I knew how but after spending the last few days frustrated at my carving attempts I'm positive I'm not getting the tools sharp enough.

Daddio. My shop is always open to anyone who wants to stop by. The only charge is good conversation and friendship. Thanks for the compliment.

I'd like to spend the day w/ Mark Gargac learning how to do faces on sticks a little better. I think his sticks and canes are just awesome.

Talking Re: If you Could...

I would love to spend it with Susan Irish. I know most of you on here are carvers, and some carvers that use wood burning to enhance their carvings. But I'm the opposite I'm a wood burners who uses carving to enhance my wood burning to make it dimensional. lol

So I'm learning relief carving to accomplish this. Susan is so multitalented and artistic. I could learn it from top to bottom. The process of designing and laying it out all the way through to complete execution including sharpening which I need also.

She is just as good a wood burner as she is a relief carver so I would have both all in one package.

I also admire her generosity even more than her talent and artistry. Even though I have so much to learn my main priority is to pay it forward as Susan does. This is her lively hood but she doesn't keep it all to herself as many do, she shares it with others openly.

I want to share with others what I have learned and been given by many others besides Susan here and on my other forum. My two homes away from home. To pass it on and keep these wonderful art forms alive.

Thanks everyone for all the learning and inspiration (especially you Susan) and keep up the good work.

And thank you Kitaye for starting this great thread. Look forward to reading more of the responses.

Blessings,
Tina (future relief burner )

I'd like to spend the day with Rick. No carvin, no sharpenin, no whittlin, just visitin and yarn tellin. You limited it to one, so Theresa's going to have to be a little sneaky cause I bet she's got some good ones to tell too.

I would like to spend a day with Harley Refsal and discuss flat plane carving and his teaching around Europe with the people who know it best ..

That would be a great time ..

If I was limited to one, I would want to spend it with Gene Messer. Through his videos on You-Tube and through this board I feel as though he is a friend already. I would even supply the wood so I could see him in person with a couple "little guys"

Cheers.

I think it would have to be either Harold Enlow or Tom Wolfe.

This is a tough question. I'll just pick everyone who has posted on here since I've joined this board.

What a wealth of information that could be had that day.

I know, I took the easy road on this question, but it would be great to see and visit with everyone. Thumbs Up
