Wink If there were no Basswood...????

The most convenient and prominent wood to carve with is Basswood (or Lindenwood)... If there were no Basswood, or Lindenwood to carve with anywhere... Which alternate wood would you choose to carve with as your main go to wood??? Could you adapt without Linden and Basswood??? As for me, i have 3 woods i carve with over basswood and linden wood... Sycamore, Eastern or Radiata pine, Poplar...

The cucumber tree produces wood as good as basswood.

You're missing Butternut - it's my go-to wood.

I'm with Jim. Aspen is very close to basswood and plentiful in my area of Utah.

Xanthocyparis nootkatensis = west coast yellow cedar and a bunch of other common names.
Used to be Chamycyparis nootkatensis until the nomenclature police got done with it a few years ago.

I'll stick with western red cedar ( Thuja plicata).

Just about any wood where the late summer wood does not end abruptly to make each growth ring very different in density.

Alder, Birch, Maple, Apple, Pear, Cedar, Lilac, Buckthorn, really just about anything.

Basswood is sort of boring.

I had a grand time making Santas last year with a bunch of white pine I got from a friend.
I've used up what I had but I'll use it over basswood when I can.

I am carving Koa, Milo, Kou, mango, just got some Zebra, Paduak a major favorite, rosewood, that I am going to carve figures in for knifes. I am going to go for some more ebony,...last carving the wood was excellent and great to carve in. Basswood is shipped in from the mainland.
