I was wondering if anyone had a good idea for blade covers to protect the edge of my Whittling knives when I'm done with them and store them in my box? I could roll them in a towel or buy a canvas tool sheath but was just curious if someone has an idea? sean |

i bought a metal handgun case for my tools. all shinny and silver, my wife had a fit thinking i got a gun. lol. but for 30 bucks i got one thats supposed to hold two hand guns, its solid and lined with egg crate foam, my tools dont shift when closed and stay protected from weather and the accidental drop of a cloth roll.

Lance, that's not a half bad idea I never had thought of that. My knives aren't expensive but that's no reason not to take care of them. |

my case holds 20 palm chisles plus 3 change out handles on the top layer and i keep about 15 double ended files/strop and extra blades in the bottom layer.

im all about not so expensive stuff, it wont do the carving for us anyway. but your right, we do need to take care of what we have and i found this to be a good inexpensive way to do it. i will admit, carring around a gun case does tend to freak people out. be warned

I just cut plastic tubing and slip it over the ends of my knives and gouges. You can get it in most hardware stores in various diameters so it can fit over just about any thing. buy it by the foot and you'll have plenty to go around. Al |

You could always look around tag sales, etc, and pick up and old brief case, then add in the foam yourself. That might be more PC. Mark |

Simple blade cover that works a treat. Just a strip of vinyl sewn up each side. Line the inside with a lid from a plastic container folded in 1/2 then stuff a little Dacron wadding into the bottom. A small squirt of silicone spray in the Dacron and those knives and gouges will stand up to anything. I put all my current tools into a bag for a Lap Top Computer. It is cheap, has pockets everywhere, is soft and even carries my reference books with room for expansion (oh yeah I have to get me more tools!). I aim to replace the vinyl with Kangaroo hide just as soon as I source a hide from an old male. |

Sean, you're certainly right in separating your precious cutting edges from damage. A long time ago I got tired of having to fix damaged cutting edges and I thought I was being careful with them. Always storing them in sleeves works for me. Like a lot of carvers I store mine in one of the many fishing tackle boxes. I've got one with dividers in the drawers that will hold at least two knives per divided area. I also use the popular clear plastic tubes cut to fit. If they are a little to small in diameter to stick to the handle when put it over the blade I carefully heat locally the tube with my trusty blow torch, slide it in place on the knife and put under running water to cool to lock the form fit in place. Also I use, for smaller knives, Surgical rubber tube cut to fit just the blade.

Okay--so I'm the simple one. It was actually suppose to be temporary but I took a piece of cereal box cardboard, folded it over, cut it to length and width, and wrapped it with masking tape. Then I trimmed the open end to match the handle so it would butt up snug and still leave room so the knife tip doesn't touch the fold of the cardboard. It works for me. BTW--I think I go the idea from Rick Ferry. Bob L Last edited by Just Carving; 09-01-2009 at 08:16 AM. |
