I'm sure if I look long enough I could probably find it but maybe somebody has quick access to the info. I'm looking for something that would tell me how long the arms should be in relation to the legs....how big the chest should be in relation to the head...how big the hands should be in relation to the arms, etc. I'm interested in carving figures for wood automata projects and realistic proportions are something that I wold like to stay with so any help would be appreciated. Ken

You need to get the book "drawing the head and figure" by Jack Hamm. ISBN #0-399-50791-4 Yes, I know it is a book on drawing. But it has one of the best set of instructions on head and body proportions you can find. It's simple and easy to understand. Every carver that does a human face or body parts should keep these rules handy. |

Another resource would be the "Human Proportion Wheel" which is sold by a number of carving supply houses.

On the lighter side, you must remember that some human bodies are proportioned better than others!!! Bob

hi, general rule of a normal body is arms r a 1/3 of the legs, the body is 2/3 of the legs, and the head is a 1/4 of the legs. just to get a idea of the legs r 4" the arms would be 3"[some times the hands come a little passed the waist] and the body would be 3" and the head is from the shoulder to the elbow would be 1" then the neck overall the head would be 1.1/2 look in the mirror of how your body is and try to peice it up some people have longer arms, legs, bodys be thats a general rule of thumb good luck and safe carvin
