Default House built around a carving

Hi Gang,
Do you remember in the summer I was commissioned to carve a large 13ft white pine in a residence that had not been built. I have just recieved a picture of from the client with the house now built on the outside anyway. Just thought that I would share it with you. I hope this works as a direct link if not it is on picture trail on the woodspirit album. I have noticed that the carving has faded somewhat from its original state you can see the carving when I finished it on this album under 13 ft pine. You can also see where the carving has oozed sap that has turned it white in places. I will go and see the carving in the spring and see if there is anyway to remove the sap. Just thought you might like to see the house.

Dear Sir, You did'n't ask for any advice but I thought Id just make a comment If I may. When I was A kid my mom used to remove sap or (pine pitch) from our hands or anything else we got it on with kerosene, (or number 1 fuel). It might work on your carving but it might darken the carving also. Again , I wouldnt attempet to give you any advise because I know you don't need any but just thought Id put a bug in your ear. Your a GREAT CARVER.

WOW - What a house they had to build to perfectly accent your wonderful carving! The white I see is on his beard and looks pretty natural. As it ages it will create some great character.
Keep up the good work-

Muffy,
Firstly dont call me sir Colin will do the only people that called me sir was the ones I arrested before I retired. Secondly I really appreciate your comments and advice I have said many times on this message board that the day you dont learn something is a bad day. I can learn from a small child as well as an older person and Muffy if I dont like the way the tar has seeped out when I return in the spring your remedy will be the first one I try. I agree Barry it might just add a lot of character to the carving as it ages. I had no idea the house was going to be that big. Thanks for the advice and kind comments I always take to heart what people tell me because sometimes as an artist I am far too critical of my work.

Colin: Your work amazes me. If I can't hold it in my hand, I feel it is too big.
I would test the kerosene on some other wood first. The oil content might be a little high, and darken the wood a little like boiled linseed oil. Years ago, they called it 'Coal Oil.' Just a thought.

Merry Christmas to all. Ken in So Cal

Wow Colin, that is a beautiful house! Do the clients have a problem with the pine sap? If not perhaps by the time you go there in the spring it will look better to you, the rest of it aging some, you know! As mentioned before here, we are our own worst critics! As for now, I agree with Barry, it looks great!! Callynne

P.S. Wonder if anyone will ever build a house around one of my carvings...oh, wait...mine are only 12' tall...guess it could be a doll house! :

WOW, you got those folks you arrested to call you SIR???? Boy that's one they didn't call me very often.......what they did call me usually started with 'son-of-a...........', and then various derrogatory terms from there on.

The house and carving combo DO rate you a SIR, though! That's a great combination, thanks for posting it, Colin!

As I told you guys before dont mess with the Mounties they know if they dont treat us with respect we can find many more offences to charge them with and if they get too mouthy we trample them with our horses. LOL
You know the nicest thing about being retired is that now 99% of the people I talk to are all nice law abiding citizens like you guys.

Hey Colin, thats because we are out in the light of day instead of working at the wee hours! There for awhile I thought vampires were the only ones left until I switched to dayshift and saw a couple normal looking types walking around! : You know...all kidding aside, there has been a resurgence of appreciation for our military..as usual it will stop in about 20 minutes after the fighting is over! We also had a strong appreciation of the fire fighters after 9-11 and rightfully so....but hey! How about a great big sound of applause for police officers, wherever they are! it is a hard dirty job at times and is only appreciated when its the 'other' guy getting busted! But without law enforcement we would have anarchy.........and even uncle archy!!
