Default Hiking Staff

I was hiking over the weekend on a challenging wilderness trail and found that a hiking stick would have come in very handy...so I was inspired to carve a hiking staff. I got a little carried away as you can see as what was supposed to be a very practical hiking stick got a little fancier as I went along. The pattern is one you will recognize as I got the idea from one of the articles from WCI magazine. If you look closely, you'll see three characters on the staff...the woodspirit on top...the bushman just below...and finally my version of a female elf or woodsprite. The pictures did not turn out very well for me unfortunately. The staff is made out of basswood and was treated with oil, sealer and dark satin wax.

Patrick, that is one great stick. The carvings are done very well and the addition of the full length relief carving really makes it special. You may not want to take it hiking.

I did a really nice, to me, Diamond Willow for my sister. I don't think it's been on a walk not to mention hike. She's afraid to scratch it.

Thank you Sharon, Ron and Forrest.

Sharon, not sure on the diameter as I don't have the staff right now. It does fit nicely in a grip...my fingers wrap around it very easily.

Ron, I had planned on carving a topper and leave it at that...but as usual, I got carried away. I figure if I break it, I would then have three talking sticks. .

Very nice female face!

I like the overall effect of the staff, kind of a family so to speak.

Thumbs up Re: Hiking Staff

Carried away is right Patrick .. you got those sticks so great looking .. I dont know if I would use it to walk with ..

Those are pieces of art Patrick .. not just plain sticks .. whoever walked with one would be the envy of the neighborhood ..

great work
